A jury in Santa Cruz has decided that Adrian A.J. Gonzalez, a convicted rapist and murderer, will remain incarcerated in the juvenile system for two more years. The decision followed a long trial regarding his release, driven by the community's safety concerns. The case, stemming from the 2015 kidnapping, rape, and murder of eight-year-old Madyson Middleton, has continued to impact the community nearly a decade later. Prosecutors and community members expressed relief and gratitude towards the jury for their decision to keep Gonzalez detained, highlighting the community's lasting trauma from the crime.
This was an incredibly difficult case from 2015 and the impact that it has had on the community and we are still feeling the rippling effects of it almost 10 years later, said prosecuting attorney Tara George after the verdict.
The work and effort that was put in by everyone involved in our community to keep all of us safe was a tireless effort on behalf of our jurors and so we thank them for their service.
Jurors declared that they found confessed rapist and murderer Adrian A.J. Gonzalez remains a threat to the public and should remain incarcerated for another two years per state law.
