Emily Pape '26 rallies the Big Red team for the greater good | Cornell Chronicle
Briefly

Emily Pape, a high school sophomore during the pandemic, turned a challenging recruitment situation into an opportunity. Instead of traditional recruitment routes, she focused on enhancing her basketball skills by practicing 3-5 hours daily. This dedication led to her success in securing a place on Cornell's women's basketball team. Currently, as a Division 1 player, she established the Cornell Student Athletes for Sustainability club and is leading the Big Red in the EcoAthletes Collegiate Cup, fostering environmental awareness and community engagement among her peers.
It was a blessing in disguise. I was able to train on my own terms, focusing heavily on skills that needed improvement during the isolation period.
I sent my game schedule to the Cornell women's basketball coaches, sharing my passion for basketball and my commitment to environmental studies.
Being the captain of the Cornell team in the EcoAthletes Collegiate Cup, I aim to inspire my peers and promote sustainability through fun and competitive challenges.
With my training and the support of my community, we've already surpassed last year's winning team in participant count for this year's EcoAthletes competition.
