Healthcare workers at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland have initiated a strike, protesting against the institution's cancellation of union contracts and cuts to take-home pay. The National Union of Healthcare Workers, representing about 1,300 employees, claims UCSF's actions constitute union busting, potentially forcing a transition to new employment terms that could diminish worker benefits. Workers cite the urgency of their strike amid staff shortages, expressing that many long-time employees are leaving due to these unfavorable conditions. UCSF argues that the integration process aims to enhance pediatric care in the Bay Area.
This is not what we want to do, but UCSF has shown that they are not willing to come to the table in any real way to work with us. They have really forced our hand.
What they're doing to us here is nothing less than union busting. They're trying to take away our union, the things that we've worked for and collaborated for throughout the years.
