Saint Augustine's University (SAU) has suffered a major setback after the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges denied its appeal to maintain accreditation, following earlier compliance failures related to governance and finances. After a court reprieve last July, SAU's struggles worsened, leading to severe financial issues and an attempt to lease its campus to 50 Plus 1 Sports to raise funds. However, state officials rejected the deal due to asset transfer concerns, and SAU plans to seek legal remedies to restore accreditation rights while stressing its commitment to improvement and academic excellence.
"We have made substantial progress and are confident that our strengthened financial position and governance will ensure a positive outcome," Board of Trustees chairman Brian Boulware said.
"SAU is resilient, and we are resolute in our commitment to academic excellence," Boulware emphasized in his statement about their future plans.
Despite pursuing various financial lifelines, SAU has navigated severe fiscal issues that left it teetering on the brink of closure for months.
The North Carolina attorney general's office cited insufficient documentation in rejecting the proposed lease to 50 Plus 1 Sports, which would have provided essential funds.
