The planned installation of the giant statue "R-Evolution" in Union Square was canceled due to fears over the impact of its weight on the plaza's fragile granite tiles. The statue, created by Marco Cochrane, measures 45 feet tall and weighs approximately 13,000 pounds, with additional anchoring weight. Despite the setback, there's optimism as the sculpture may find a new home at Embarcadero Plaza, with support from San Francisco's Recreation and Parks Department, pending approval from the SF Arts Commission in March.
"Due to the delicate nature of the plaza's tiles, and required positioning of the statue, Union Square is unable to host R-Evolution," said Union Square Alliance CEO Marisa Rodriguez.
"The piece could go up at the Embarcadero Plaza, the same park that's home to the angular Vaillancourt Fountain," noted a representative from SF Recreation and Parks.
"We think the new location is perfect and we are excited to move forward with the process," Rec and Parks spokesperson Tamara Aparton told the Examiner.
The sculpture, 45-feet tall and with a base weight of 13,000 lbs, adds significant weight with the required steel plate anchoring, totaling an additional 16,000 lbs.
