The University of Florida faces an uncertain future in finding a president after Santa Ono's selection was rejected by the Florida Board of Governors. The board's contentious 10-to-6 vote raised concerns over Ono’s past support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. His ideological shift towards a conservative educational vision did not satisfy the board. This unprecedented rejection may dissuade other academic leaders from applying, further complicating the search for both a permanent and interim president, especially as the university rapidly approaches a leadership vacancy.
Anyone doing their homework on Florida right now, unfortunately, is going to have to decide whether or not to take a huge career risk to be in that search.
The Board of Governors rejected Ono despite the UF's Board of Trustees' unanimous vote to hire him, which is unprecedented on a national level.
