The National Association of Realtors has rejected calls from Compass, a leading real estate brokerage, to end a policy mandating agents to publicly list properties on multiple listing services (MLS). This policy enables broader visibility for homes and helps maintain competitive pricing. Compass argues for private listings to protect seller privacy and avoid price reductions but faces criticism for prioritizing its commission structure over potential seller benefits. The association will, however, allow some sellers to delay public listings, introducing an exemption to enhance choice.
In a decision this week, the real estate association said it will continue requiring agents to list homes on MLS allowing other agents to see the listings.
Compass argues private listings protect sellers' privacy and helps them avoid price drops if their publicly listed property remains unsold for too long.
