Tonantzyn Oris Beltran, 29, has changed her plea to not guilty by reason of insanity in her mother's murder case. Beltran previously pleaded not guilty without an insanity claim.
Judge Geoffrey Howard stated that if Beltran is found legally insane, she could be committed to a state hospital or mental health treatment facility, indicating the serious implications of the insanity plea.
During her court appearance, Beltran calmly answered the judge's questions and is currently facing two potential trials - one for the alleged murder and one to determine her mental state.
Beltran was arrested after allegedly fatally stabbing her mother, prominent activist Olivia Beltran, during a standoff, and she reportedly broadcast the attack live on social media.
