A boat heading out of Santa Cruz Harbor capsized due to a large northwest swell, prompting a swift multi-agency rescue response around 5:15 p.m. on Thursday. Capt. Gabe McKenna of State Parks highlighted the dangers posed by the swell and low tide. Initially, reports indicated one to two people and a dog were in the water, but only one 39-year-old male was eventually rescued. Post-incident, the vessel was secured and removed from the beach, with the operator transported to the hospital for care.
"We had a very large northwest swell with a low tide during that time, and the transit out of the harbor and into the ocean was very dangerous."
"Ultimately, the male got to shore and was transported to Dominican."
