Is San Francisco's Union Square still a draw for Black Friday shoppers?
"I love it. It's a really cool place. I love hanging out here,"
"It's the vibe that we wanted to experience. We've never been out here after Thanksgiving. We're out here for people watching, eating,"
"You got to push your way in. Back in the days of Blondie's Pizza and stuff like that. I told her I'm reminiscing,"
"We got a Mario hat. And then I got my dad kind of a matching one of mine, but kind of a Mario version,"
Union Square was alive Friday with the sights and sounds of the holidays. Visitors said they visit for the holiday vibe, people-watching, and dining as much as for shopping. Many planned to do a portion of their shopping online while still treating a Union Square visit as a holiday necessity. Some shoppers expressed nostalgia for old Black Friday traditions of lining up and rushing into stores. Shoppers displayed purchases such as Mario-themed hats. For years after the COVID-19 pandemic, security remained a concern in the area. The city has taken steps to make people feel safer.
