The letter highlights a pressing need for young and informed leadership in Oakland, advocating for Loren Taylor as mayor to address critical issues like the budget deficit and homelessness. It criticizes the California Legislature’s proposal for a new sales tax for Bay Area transit without prior audits to ensure transparency of operational costs. The writer further argues for accountability in the Metropolitan Transportation District to clarify transit fiscal needs. Finally, there is a defense of Measure T, stating it would uphold high standards in the Acalanes School District amid opposing editorial opinions.
We need leadership that isn't accountable to special interests. We need leadership focused on Oakland and what needs to be done to make the Oakland government work for us.
It is amazing that the California Legislature has proposed a bill to establish a new sales tax for Bay Area transit systems without any audit to match current operational expenses with unknown tax revenues.
Vote no on any increased sales tax proposal until the Metropolitan Transportation District reveals Bay Area transit expenses and future fiscal needs with an audit. Transparency and accountability must occur.
I respectfully disagree with the editorial on the issue of a parcel tax for the Acalanes School District. Measure T would keep school standards high.
