Jamil Zaki, a psychology professor at Stanford, discusses his new book "Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness." He reflects on his personal struggle with cynicism, especially during the pandemic, and stresses the importance of recognizing human goodness. Zaki emphasizes that while many harbor distrust in others, there's a profound power in hope that can enhance our lives. His research integrates neuroscience and psychology to explore empathy, kindness, and the social connections that can combat cynicism.
I decided to write a book about cynicism because I was drowning in it. It turns out that I often have trouble trusting others and I sometimes feel like maybe human beings are not that great.
If this is happening to me, then imagine how other people feel. That's what inspired me to begin this journey toward understanding human goodness.
