The eBird program by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has achieved significant milestones, surpassing 2 billion bird sightings and 3 million sound recordings. This participatory science platform allows global users to report bird observations, contributing valuable data for scientific research on bird populations and habitats. Alfonso Auerbach recorded the historic 2 billionth sighting. eBird has expanded rapidly since its 2002 launch, gathering over 150 million checklists from more than 1 million contributors worldwide and supporting 99 languages, thus facilitating extensive data collection for conservation purposes.
"When birders keep track of the number and species of birds they find and add these checklists of birds to eBird, their observations become part of a global database that scientists and land managers use for research and conservation."
"In the early days, we had aspirations for being able to use eBird as a platform that would be able to gather a lot of data, but we didn't really have any idea how we were going to do it."
