The issues that resulted in astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams extending their stay at the International Space Station were the culmination of years of shortcomings that have delayed the Starliner. The spacecraft is leaking helium and some thrusters experienced issues, NPR reported.
NASA official Steve Sitch mentioned that rigorous tests are being conducted on the ground to replicate the thruster issues observed in space, which could last a couple of weeks. He emphasized that the astronauts are safe and enjoying their time on the space station.
Boeing's delays with the Starliner highlight its lag behind SpaceX in crewed NASA flights, with SpaceX also making strides in national security missions. NASA continues ground and in-orbit testing while the astronauts remain at the ISS.
