On January 10, workers in a Downtown Los Angeles cold storage facility were on edge following Border Patrol's recent operation targeting undocumented farm workers around Bakersfield. The fear, confirmed by a foreman present during the raid, has affected the normally busy working environment, prompting workers to hide. The owner of a prominent farm expressed outrage over the potential impact these actions might have on food supply chains. U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Operation Return to Sender involved 60 agents and reportedly led to numerous arrests, sparking concerns within the farming community about the future of labor and local food infrastructure.
The foreman of the crew working in the warehouse, who is a U.S. citizen, acknowledged he'd been on the farm when the agents showed up.
The impact this is going to have on food is crazy," the farmer added. "They are visiting everyone. Southern California's whole food infrastructure.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection acknowledged that they had sent 60 agents from the El Centro office to sweep the Bakersfield area for four days as part of 'Operation Return to Sender.'
The agency reported arresting 78 persons, but others estimated that nearly 1,000 may have been arrested and released.
