Tour an Immersive Indoor-Outdoor Retreat on Hawaii's Big Island
Briefly

Hale Mau'u, a 5,000 square foot property on Hawaii's Big Island, masterfully blends modern architecture with its stunning natural surroundings. Designed by Walker Warner Architects and influenced by Catherine Kwong Design, the property features an unconventional layout consisting of five bedrooms, a central structure housing the living area, and a unique connection through a courtyard. The design emphasizes views, privacy, and weather responsiveness while incorporating a tranquil, human-scaled ambiance through thoughtful use of textiles and vintage furnishings. This collaboration reflects a deep respect for Hawaii’s beauty and a vision to create something innovative.
"Her vision was very intentional and respectful, wanting to create something new that hadn't been done before," says Catherine Kwong on the private client's goals.
"The somewhat unconventional layout of the buildings is in direct response to the site, intentionally designed and positioned to maximize views, privacy, and the weather," explains Greg Warner.
"It was about layering on all these textiles to temper the architecture and the rugged setting, creating a peaceful and approachable space," Kwong emphasizes.
"Woven Frissell enriches the living space with texture, alongside a mix of vintage pieces for a timeless accessibility," highlighting the home's design ethos.
