The recent analysis of US Labor Department data reveals a troubling trend in the tech sector, with 29,000 jobs lost in March despite a 0.1% decline in the unemployment rate, now at 3.1%. CompTIA noted a significant decrease in tech services and telecommunications jobs. Tim Herbert from CompTIA mentioned that companies are hesitant to make moves amid uncertainty. Meanwhile, the overall job growth in the US surpassed expectations with 228,000 positions added. The IT job market is shrinking, with a significant loss of jobs in the early part of 2025 due to government-related job cuts.
"With many employers in wait-and-see mode, the jobs data is about in line with expectations for the month," said Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA.
Victor Janulaitis, CEO of IT industry research firm Janco Associates, said DOGE's impact is causing IT contracts to be delayed, leaving government IT professionals uncertain about their future.
The overall US unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.2% in March, just 0.1% higher than in February, amid mixed signals in the IT job market.
"We believe that many low-skilled, legacy-skilled IT pros, or displaced IT professionals have stopped looking for jobs in the IT sector," he said.
