Oshawa retirement home, 3rd employee charged in 2023 death of resident | CBC News
Briefly

Two employees and a retirement home in Oshawa have been charged with criminal negligence related to the death of a 79-year-old resident. The woman was found outside on April 1, 2023, after being locked out overnight. She suffered from exposure, which was confirmed by an autopsy. The police are investigating, and significant concerns have been raised regarding the provision of care at the facility, which claims to support vulnerable seniors in a secure environment.
Laura Tamblyn Watts, CEO of CanAge, commented on the charges, stating, "It is quite unusual for a retirement home to face criminal negligence charges... This tragic incident raises serious questions about the care provided to vulnerable residents."
Durham Regional Police Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss indicated, "The evidence suggests that the resident was left without adequate care and access to the facility, which directly contributed to her tragic death due to exposure."
