Season 2 of HBO's The Last of Us promises to delve deeper into the narrative by reintroducing spores, a significant element from the original game that was omitted in Season 1 due to its implications on storytelling. The trailer reveals Ellie encountering an Infected body from which spores are released, raising questions about her immunity and the narrative choices. Co-showrunner Craig Mazin explained that the absence of spores in Season 1 was to avoid a scenario where characters constantly wore masks due to widespread infection, favoring the use of tendrils instead. This shift foreshadows a darker exploration in the coming season.
In the world that we're creating, if we put spores in the air, it would be pretty clear that they would spread around everywhere and everybody would have to wear a mask all the time.
HBO's The Last of Us is no stranger to meandering away from the video game's story. Its changes are usually additions, not omissions.
