Cycling advocates in Toronto are hopeful as the Ontario government indicates potential for compromise on removing three bike lanes. Mayor Olivia Chow has proposed a solution that would maintain bike lanes while reinstating a car lane. The transportation minister’s spokesperson expressed openness to collaboration if the city funds necessary infrastructure. Advocates are cautiously optimistic, stressing the importance of not sacrificing safety features in the proposed compromises, as they believe removing bike lanes won't alleviate traffic congestion.
I think the province knows that they're not going to solve traffic congestion by taking out bike lanes.
If they're stripping away any of the protective barriers and the speed calming measures, then I don't think it's worth compromising.
