The tragic case unfolded as Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah forced their three-year-old son, Abiyah, into an extreme vegan diet, neglecting his critical health needs and leading to his severe malnourishment and death.
Evidence presented in court revealed that the parents did not seek medical assistance when Abiyah became critically ill, believing in their own disjointed lifestyle and setting up a personal legal framework to justify their choices.
Their son’s health was attributed to critical nutritional deficiencies resulting in severe conditions such as rickets and anaemia, which they attempted to address with ineffective home remedies instead of professional medical care.
After being found guilty of causing their son's death, the couple was handed sentences of 24-and-a-half years for Tai and 19-and-a-half years for Naiyahmi, underscoring the severity of their neglect.
