New Zealand police recently raided the property of Paul Smith, known as Gandalf, dismantling his medicinal cannabis operation. This sparked protests from supporters, including prominent politician Pearl Schomburg, who argued that Smith's actions were vital for patients seeking affordable relief. Although medicinal cannabis was legalized in 2020, accessibility remains a challenge due to prescription requirements and stigma. Many patients remain dependent on informal providers like Smith to manage their pain, as legal alternatives are often too expensive or difficult to obtain, highlighting a gap in the healthcare system.
This isn't just an attack on one man, it's an assault on hundreds of patients who rely on affordable relief, said protest organiser Pearl Schomburg.
They ransacked his house and took away all of his thank-you cards and letters. Smith was no criminal mastermind ... a compassionate, barefoot hippy with a battered truck and a heart of gold.
