"We are always encouraging people to be out and about and active and then this awful tragedy happened. I passed the scene earlier and there are a lot of flowers and balloons where people have been trying to come together to show their support for the family. It's hard to comprehend it all," he added. "No parent should ever have to have a funeral for a child," he said.
People who were in the vicinity at the time rushed to assist and called the emergency services, and also placed a temporary cordon around the girl until they arrived. They also tried to console the girl's distraught father.
