Hadi Matar, 27, has been found guilty of attempted murder in the stabbing of Salman Rushdie, who testified about the attack in a New York court. The incident occurred in August 2022 at the Chautauqua Institution, where Rushdie was scheduled to deliver a talk. Matar attacked Rushdie moments before he was to speak, stabbing him multiple times, which resulted in Rushdie losing partial eyesight. Matar was also found guilty of assaulting Ralph Henry Reese, a fellow speaker who was injured during the attack. Sentencing is expected on April 23, with Matar facing up to 32 years in prison.
Mr. Rushdie testified that he had been struck by his attacker's dark, ferocious eyes and initially believed he was being punched before realizing he was bleeding heavily.
The jury convicted Hadi Matar of attempted murder following harrowing testimony from Salman Rushdie, who described the attack's intensity and his disbelief as he was stabbed.
