In response to rising youth violence related to knife sales, the UK government will enforce stricter rules for retailers selling knives online, collectively dubbed Ronan's Law. Following a review by the National Police Chiefs' Council, new regulations will require reporting of suspicious knife purchases and increase penalties, including a longer prison term for selling to minors. A dedicated policing unit will monitor illegal sales on social media, alongside enhanced identity checks for buyers. These measures aim to mitigate access to knives, particularly among young people, and address a critical public safety concern.
"It is horrifying how easy it is for young people to get hold of knives online," said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. "Even though children's lives are being lost, and families and communities are left devastated as a result."
The new policing unit backed with 1m of funding to monitor for weapons being sold illegally on social media will be created as part of these measures.
