A proposed law in Ireland seeks to increase the number of Defence Forces peacekeepers deployed overseas from 12 to 50 troops, bypassing the UN Security Council's veto power. Minister Harris argues that the UN Security Council has not authorized peacekeeping missions since 2014 and insists that this change would not undermine Ireland's military neutrality. He emphasizes flexibility for troop deployment in accordance with the UN Charter, allowing for better responsiveness in crises, such as evacuating citizens from hostile areas, while maintaining a commitment to peacekeeping values.
The idea of the UN Security Council having a veto on where we deploy Irish troops in relation to peacekeeping is something that needs to be modified.
We cannot have a situation where any one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia or anybody else, can veto that decision.
We are removing in all circumstances the idea of the UN Security Council having a mandate.
Missions would have to be in line with the UN Charter, instead of the UN Security Council and effectively Putin or others having a veto on where our troops go.
