Man jailed for abusive emails to politicians
Briefly

Jack Bennett, a 39-year-old man from Devon, was sentenced to 28 weeks in prison for sending multiple malicious emails to prominent public figures, including a government minister and the Mayor of London. The emails were described as 'utterly deplorable' by District Judge Stuart Smith, highlighting Bennett's hateful rhetoric towards Muslims and immigrants. His actions caused fear among the recipients, particularly Jess Phillips, in light of recent violence against MPs, notably the murder of Jo Cox. Bennett is also subject to a five-year restraining order against contacting these officials.
District judge Stuart Smith condemned the emails as "utterly deplorable, foul, abusive and saturated in hate," highlighting the severity of Bennett's actions.
The incidents occurred between February 2024 and January 2025, during which Bennett was exposed to right-wing propaganda.
Bennett's angry, poisonous and hateful rhetoric displayed disdain for Muslims and immigrants, raising concerns over the public figures' safety.
Following the receipt of the emails, the three prominent individuals reported feeling fearful, particularly Jess Phillips after the murder of MP Jo Cox.
