Reform UK sets out plan to tax renewable energy
Briefly

Reform UK's deputy leader Richard Tice announced the party's intention to impose taxes on the renewable energy sector and abolish the UK's net zero target, labeling renewable policies as detrimental to citizens through increased energy bills and industrial decline. Tice criticized what he termed a "massive con" regarding renewables, proposing a "generation tax" and specific taxation for solar farms, while emphasizing the need for transparency regarding subsidy costs related to energy bills. The party's opposition starkly contrasts the Labour government's plans to expand renewable energy and eliminate fossil fuels by 2030.
"The British people are being ripped off by the renewables industry," Tice told a news conference. He suggested a "generation tax" and a "special corporation tax" would cover the costs of government funding for renewable energy.
Tice argued net-zero policies were to blame for higher energy bills and deindustrialisation in the UK. He said renewable energy was a "massive con".
The party did not share further details about how the taxes would work in practice, including at what rate renewables would be taxed, or how much revenue would be raised.
Currently, the rebranded Brexit Party has five MPs after winning 14% of the vote nationally in last year's general election.
