Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out entering into a 'tariff war' with the United States, as the UK government actively negotiates an economic deal with Washington. Despite the looming threat of a trade war between the EU, Canada, and the US, Starmer emphasizes a pragmatic approach, hoping to achieve a deal that could exempt the UK from tariffs—already imposed on aluminum and steel. He insists that all options are open while prioritizing a constructive agreement that benefits both nations, with support from Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, who seeks to improve trade relations before traveling to the US.
The prize is not a tariff war, which I don't think is going to be in our interests. The prize is an economic agreement or deal.
Obviously I'm disappointed to see tariffs, global tariffs, in relation to steel and aluminium.
I do think we can look to the opportunity the UK has, which is greater than any other country, to get to an agreement.
My response is to keep my feet on the ground, to be pragmatic, to keep ensuring that we keep our eyes on the prize.
