Authorities determine no ongoing threat after gun discovery at Santa Cruz County school
"An ongoing investigation by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office determined that the weaponry and mask found Jan. 18 were not placed on campus as part of any preplanned event targeting the school. Instead, these items were deemed to be discarded evidence tied to an assault that occurred among a group of juveniles Dec. 28, 2025, during the school's winter break."
"The items were found on campus 21 days after the assault, quickly igniting an investigation and overwhelming concern from school families. The Sheriff's Office, in coordination with officials from the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, implemented a number of safety measures after the gun, ammunition and mask were discovered, including a comprehensive search of the campus and surrounding areas with assistance from a bomb-detection K-9 team and bomb squad as well as increased staffing and patrol presence at all county schools."
Law enforcement confirmed that a firearm, ammunition and a mask found on the Aptos High School campus were connected to an assault Dec. 28 among a group of juveniles during winter break. The items discovered Jan. 18 were deemed discarded evidence tied to that assault. Firearms were present in December but were not discharged, and one juvenile was arrested in connection with the campus assault. The discovery 21 days later prompted a search and concern from families. Authorities and the school district deployed a bomb-detection K-9 team and bomb squad, increased staffing and patrols, activated contingency teams and emergency plans, and coordinated across agencies. Additional details are restricted due to juvenile involvement and pending court proceedings.
