Autoworkers Union Chief Gives Trump's Tariffs a Mixed Review
Briefly

Shawn Fain, president of the United Automobile Workers union, expressed a limited endorsement of the Trump administration's tariffs, suggesting that specific tariffs could revive manufacturing jobs in the U.S. However, he condemned the administration's broader tariffs as reckless and criticized its workforce policies and civil rights violations. He emphasized the need for careful negotiation rather than aligning completely with Trump, citing the negative effects of past free trade agreements on American manufacturing. Fain is also distancing the union from the administration amidst past accusations of partisanship.
We support use of some tariffs on automotive manufacturing and similar industries. We do not support tariffs for political games about immigration or fentanyl.
Mr. Fain used the address to repeat familiar claims that free trade agreements allowed corporations to move U.S. factories and jobs to low-wage countries.
