Rumeysa Ozturk, a 30-year-old Tufts University doctoral student, claims her health has worsened while detained in a Louisiana center since March 25, suffering from multiple asthma attacks. She argues this deterioration stems from the crowded living conditions and inadequate medical care in detention. Ozturk's lawyers have filed claims that her rights have been violated, seeking to have her transferred to Vermont courthouse where a judge previously acknowledged her illegal detention. The U.S. Justice Department is appealing this ruling, maintaining that the case should remain within Louisianaâs immigration courts.
Since my arrest, in the span of five weeks, I have had at least eight asthma attacks where I have felt unable to control my coughing.
Prior to my arrest, in the span of 2-3 years, I had approximately 9 such asthma attacks in which I felt unable to control my coughing.
I do not have control over the exposure to potential triggers. The dorm rooms in detention are very crowded, and the other women have reported seeing mice.
Her lawyers say her detention violates her constitutional rights, including free speech and due process.
