Federal agents arrest Don Lemon over Minnesota church protest
""ICE out.""
""Once the protest started in the church, we did an act of journalism, which was report on it and talk to the people involved, including the pastor, members of the church and members of the organization,""
""That's it. That's called journalism.""
""a stunning and troubling effort to silence and punish a journalist for doing his job,""
Don Lemon, a former CNN anchor, was arrested late Thursday on charges that he violated federal law during a Jan. 18 protest at Cities Church in St. Paul. He entered the church to observe a demonstration against immigration enforcement and says he was reporting as a journalist. Protesters interrupted a service at the church where an ICE official serves as pastor and chanted "ICE out." The Justice Department sought charges against eight people under a law protecting people seeking to participate in a house of worship service. A magistrate judge approved charges for three individuals and rejected evidence against Lemon as insufficient; a DOJ appeal was denied. Lemon and his lawyer vow to fight any prosecution, arguing the actions constituted journalism.
