Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) condemned President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice on Thursday after the arrest of two community organizers behind a controversial church protest. This is a gross abuse of power. The federal government is picking and choosing who to investigate going after protestors and not the person who shot and killed one of our neighbors. I am calling for Nekima to be released immediately.
Minutes ago at my direction, [Homeland Security Investigations] and [FBI] agents executed an arrest in Minnesota, Bondi posted to X on Thursday morning. She identified lawyer Nekima Levy Armstrong as the person arrested over the protest, which quickly drew attention due to Don Lemon's involvement. Lemon filmed the protesters and entered the church himself, leading President Donald Trump to push potential legal consequences.
So there are actually two laws, one of them being the FACE Act, the other being a civil rights law, which says it is a crime to intentionally interfere with another person's free exercise of religion. Rarely used, these laws, but they certainly exist, and the conduct that we see here on its face seems to meet the requirements of those laws, replied Honig.
We're absolutely investigating, Blanche said Monday. Our civil rights expert has already sent units out. The attorney general's office, FBI, DHS, is investigating this because what you saw you saw the fear in the eyes of the members of that church. That fear should be extended to every single American that that's happening in a city in this country, and we are investigating it aggressively.
What I would've done, Jen, is I would've said No, we live in a country where we welcome dissent, we welcome the right to peaceably assemble. We welcome that. And so, we may not like it [because] it is uncomfortable. But that is what protest is about discomfort. So since you're here, please, please, calm down, let's try to talk. What would you like us to do?
