
"Rescuers trekked hours in whiteout conditions to reach the group and transported six skiers off the mountain on Tuesday evening. Two of those rescued were hospitalized, according to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office. Ashley Quadros, the spokesperson for the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, told SFGATE that 46 people took part in the search and rescue on Tuesday. She did not have an update on the conditions of two skiers brought to the hospital or whether any of the missing persons were located overnight."
"The skiers, including guides and clients, were returning from a backcountry ski trip run by Blackbird Mountain Guides when the avalanche occurred. They "had been staying at the Frog Lake huts since February 15. The group was in the process of returning to the trail head at the conclusion of a three-day trip when the incident occurred," the guide company said in an statement on Tuesday."
Nine skiers remain missing after a large avalanche in the Castle Peak area near Lake Tahoe. The missing were part of a 15-person group finishing a three-day backcountry trip near Donner Summit and Frog Lake huts. Rescuers trekked hours in whiteout conditions and transported six skiers off the mountain; two were hospitalized. Nevada County search-and-rescue involved 46 people. The avalanche was reported around 11:30 a.m. at about 8,200 feet and initially classified as a D-2 large avalanche. A major winter storm dropped six feet of snow and the Sierra Avalanche Center reported dangerous conditions.
