Former Newton Mayor Setti Warren dies 'unexpectedly' at 55
"I am shocked. And I have called his phone and texted him repeatedly upon learning this devastating news as it was easier to be in denial,"
"Setti was a beloved member of our community, and we are devastated by this heartbreaking news,"
"It's often said that the measure of a person's life is found in their service to others-and by that standard, Setti's life stands as an example to us all."
"Setti loved Newton, the community where he grew up, and combined that love with a passion for public service and an unshakeable belief that government can be a force for good,"
Setti Warren died unexpectedly at his home in Newton at age 55; a cause of death has not been announced. Warren was the first African American popularly elected to lead a Massachusetts city when he became Newton mayor in 2009 and served through 2018. As mayor he invested in public schools, advanced long-term transportation planning, reduced the city's carbon footprint, and fostered the city’s innovation economy. His career included service in the Clinton administration, work for Senator John Kerry, a role as New England regional director for FEMA, and service as a Navy Reserve intelligence officer in Iraq. Local and Harvard leaders described him as beloved and devoted to public service, and Representative Ayanna Pressley expressed shock and attempted to contact him upon learning the news.
