Hurricane hurtles toward Florida with catastrophic storm surge forecast
Briefly

The National Hurricane Center cautioned that "catastrophic and deadly" storm surge could inundate wide swaths of the state's peninsula, particularly along the Big Bend. Floodwaters may rise up to 20 feet high, potentially rendering some areas "unsurvivable."
"The height of the storm surge is fatal," said Felecia Bowser, a meteorologist in Tallahassee for the National Weather Service. "This means if you remain there and you ignore the mandatory evacuation requirements, you will not make it out alive."
Meteorologists in South Carolina described Helene's potential impact as "an extremely rare event with catastrophic flash-flooding." Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) warned that the storm could unleash more wreckage in his state than any recent hurricane in memory.
