Senator Josh Hawley, known for his conservative stance, recently broke ranks with fellow Republicans by voting to protect consumers from bank overdraft fees. This vote is part of a series of measures where Hawley has aligned with populist and consumer-friendly policies, including proposing affordable insulin costs and opposing Medicaid cuts. Despite his strong conservative identity, he seeks to shift party dynamics away from corporate alliances, positioning himself as a populist advocating for working-class Americans and bridging gaps between differing political ideologies.
In 2023 he introduced a bill to cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at $25 per month, but it died in committee for lack of Republican support.
His ultimate goal is to break the alliance the social conservatives have had with the corporate world since the Reagan era, said Matt Stoller.
