A federal judge ruled against the National Treasury Employees Union and other unions seeking to stop mass firings of probationary federal employees. U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper indicated that the unions should first present their claims to the Federal Labor Relations Authority. Union leaders expressed their disappointment but are determined to advance their lawsuit against what they deem unlawful firings and threats to federal employment. The American Federation of Government Employees echoed these concerns by filing its own suit against layoffs.
Although district court review may appear more efficient or convenient to NTEU, its preference does not insulate its claims from the [Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute] review scheme.
The lawsuit we filed with our labor union partners will be heard and federal employees will get their day in court to challenge the unlawful mass firings and other attacks on their jobs.
