Malden educator, basketball coach charged with rape in incident involving high school student, officials say
"Scott Marino was arrested in connection with an alleged "serious incident" involving a Malden High School student, Superintendent Timothy Sippel said in a statement Wednesday. Marino is facing two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, and one count of selling liquor to a person under 21, records from Woburn District Court show."
"Marino is an educator at the Linden School, also known as the Linden STEAM Academy, which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. He is also head coach for the girls' basketball team at Malden High, according to Sippel. Malden police first informed the school district Feb. 19 that Marino was being investigated and the district placed him on leave."
"I understand how upsetting and distressing this is to our community given the serious nature of these allegations. We thank you for your continued commitment to our students and our district community. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority."
Scott Marino, an educator at Linden STEAM Academy and head coach of the Malden High School girls' basketball team, was arrested and charged with two counts of rape, indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, and selling liquor to a person under 21. The alleged incident involved a Malden High School student and occurred outside working hours. Malden police informed the school district of the investigation on February 19, prompting the district to place Marino on immediate leave. Stoneham police made the arrest, with charges filed Wednesday. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office is handling the case. Superintendent Timothy Sippel emphasized the district's commitment to student safety and declined further comment citing personnel and privacy laws.
