Following intense clashes with remnants of Bashar al-Assad's forces, Syria's interim government has deployed security reinforcements and established curfews in key coastal cities like Latakia and Tartous. The violence, characterized as a well-orchestrated attack by Lt. Col. Mustafa Knefati, led to numerous casualties among government troops, as reported by opposing factions. The situation is particularly tense in regions with significant Alawite populations, where targeted violence has reportedly escalated against this community since the Assad regime's fall. Activists have documented alleged extrajudicial killings, further highlighting the precarious security dynamics in the region.
"As part of a pre-planned and deliberate attack, several groups of Assad militia remnants attacked our points and checkpoints, and targeted many of our patrols," SANA quoted Lt. Col. Mustafa Knefati, the public security director in Latakia.
Turkish-based Syria TV, allied with the Syrian government, said at least 13 government security personnel were killed in an ambush near Jableh on Thursday.
