An outbreak of extreme weather has led to deadly dust storms and numerous tornadoes, particularly affecting the eastern U.S. Heavy rainfall from a stalled frontal system has caused flooding in parts of the South and Midwest, with some areas receiving more than 15 inches in just four days. This situation has resulted in significant damage, fatalities, and urgent warnings from the National Weather Service about the potential for catastrophic flooding, drawing comparisons to serious flood events from the past 200 years.
The rains prompted dire wording from the National Weather Service including warnings of a "potentially historic, prolonged flash flood event" and "serious concern of catastrophic, life-threatening" consequences from "generational" rainfall.
"This isn't routine. This is a rare, high-impact, and potentially devastating event," said a social media post from the Memphis office of the National Weather Service.
