The US State Department has re-designated Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization, reversing a previous decision by the Biden administration. This designation comes in light of the Houthis’ continuous assaults on maritime vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, with over 100 merchant ships targeted recently. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the US will not allow engagement with groups like the Houthis under the guise of legitimate business. Additionally, a $15 million reward is being offered for information on disrupting Houthi financing amid humanitarian concerns.
The US State Department has reinstated the foreign terrorist organization designation for Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi group, fulfilling an order announced by Donald Trump shortly after he took office.
The Houthis have targeted more than 100 merchant vessels in the critical trade corridor with missiles and drones since the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began in October 2023.
Rubio suggested that concerns over aid delivery in Yemen were no longer an issue, stating that the US would not tolerate any country engaging with terrorist organizations like the Houthis.
The state department's Rewards for Justice program announced it would pay up to $15m for information that leads to the disruption of Houthi financing.
