A heavily armed 23-year-old shooter opened fire inside a Catholic school in Minneapolis during Mass, killing an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old and wounding 17 others who are expected to survive. The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The FBI is investigating the attack as a possible domestic terrorism incident and a hate crime targeting Catholics, and authorities are examining writings posted by the shooter and antisemitic messages found on the shooter’s guns. Public reaction quickly turned political, with local leaders condemning “thoughts and prayers” and partisan backlash from right-wing accounts and media.
And don't just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying! It was the first week of school. They were in a church. These are kids that should be learning with their friends. They should be playing on the playground. They should be able to go to school or church in peace, without the fear or risk of violence.
In reaction to the speech, several MAGA accounts with significant followings ridiculed Frey for having knelt and wept before the casket of George Floyd in 2020.
Prayer is not freaking enough. Prayers do not end school shootings. Prayers do not make parents feel safe sending their kids to school. Prayer does not bring these kids back. Enough with the thoughts and prayers.
