House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the decision as overdue and as restoring fairness and certainty. Stacey Abrams responded that Johnson’s comments effectively celebrate the return of earlier eras when race-neutral rules reduced Black voting power. She cited poll taxes and literacy taxes as examples of race-neutral measures that diminished participation while the Voting Rights Act had previously thwarted discriminatory practices. Abrams said race and partisanship operate together in redistricting outcomes and called the developments a terrible return of Jim Crow. Other Democrats criticized recent redistricting results and linked them to preferences for limiting Black political power.
