Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te emphasized the importance of strengthening Taiwan's defenses against China's military assertiveness while expressing readiness for peaceful dialogue. In his remarks marking one year in office, Lai highlighted Taiwan's commitment to maintaining peace but stressed the need for realistic preparations to deter conflict. He indicated that Taiwan would enhance its defense through both procuring foreign arms and developing its own military industry, while also being open to equal, dignified exchanges with China. Furthermore, he addressed the challenge of recent US tariffs on Taiwanese imports amid trade negotiations.
I, too, am committed to peace. Because peace is priceless and war has no winners. But when it comes to seeking peace, we cannot have dreams or illusions.
Taiwan is happy to have exchanges and cooperation with China as long as there is reciprocal dignity. Using exchanges to replace hemming in, dialogue to replace confrontation.
