The Content-Driven Local Response (CDLR) design integrates user responses directly in the email interface, allowing for real-time interaction and thought organization. This user-centric approach empowers individuals to draft responses without switching contexts. In a study with 126 participants, the CDLR design was found to be a beneficial compromise between manual and AI-generated email replies. It not only fostered engagement and reduced cognitive load but also provided users with control over their final responses, indicating a successful merging of AI support with human input.
Instead of switching to a separate AI popup, users can insert responses directly within the email as they read, creating a more integrated and fluid experience.
CDLR provides a flexible middle ground between fully manual replies and fully AI-generated responses, enhancing user engagement and reducing typing efforts.
By allowing users to draft local responses while reading, the design facilitated engagement with the email content and the user's own thoughts.
Participants valued the control over the final message, highlighting a balance between speed and user agency in the response process.
