Thinking Deeply About Theming and Color Naming | CSS-Tricks
Briefly

Themes can significantly impact website aesthetics and identity. Front-end development benefits from creative approaches to color usage, allowing for more differentiation. Many libraries, such as Tailwind CSS, Open Props, and Pico CSS, offer various color tones, providing ample starting points for design. However, dependence on these standard palettes can lead to uniformity among sites. It's essential to focus on how colors create distinction and identity, moving beyond mere adoption of pre-defined systems to foster unique and vibrant web experiences.
Color palettes provided by these libraries and frameworks can be good starting points, but I'd argue that you almost never want to use them.
The number of tones doesn't really matter. What's important is you get sufficient color tones to create subtle effects for various parts of the design.
