Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 draws significant inspiration from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and IV: Oblivion, according to senior designer Ondřej Bittner. He emphasized that the design team, primarily in their 30s and 40s, sought to recapture the essence of classic RPGs by limiting the availability of side quests and avoiding immediate player guidance. Bittner argues that constant rewards can lead to player disengagement and prefers providing a more organic experience where players decide their journey. The game's successful launch saw over 150,000 concurrent players and one million copies sold on its first day, reflecting its appeal.
Bittner expressed that the design philosophy behind Kingdom Come 2 intentionally avoids instant gratification, which he believes can overwhelm players, making gameplay feel obnoxious.
He mentioned that the game design embraces a core RPG experience where players can explore freely without constant direction, contrasting with younger players' preferences.
