A couple of years ago, Carlos Matias started writing short stories about New York, which led to 'Emergency Quarters,' a children's book based on his childhood experiences.
Matias recalls how his mother gave him a quarter every day for emergencies when he started walking to school alone, a sentiment he incorporated into the book.
The story 'Emergency Quarters' depicts a boy named Ernesto navigating his first solo walk to school, mirroring Matias' experience with his mother's advice on using a payphone for emergencies.
Illustrator Gracey Zhang, also a '90s kid, enjoyed working on the book to bring Matias' nostalgic '90s childhood to life using traditional pencil sketches.
